BEGINNERS PERMIT:

New law

Applies to persons who obtain a beginners permit after the new law’s effective date. These individuals will be licensed entirely under the new law. Must be at least 15. Bring your birth certificate and social security card. Pass the vision and knowledge (written) tests. If you are under 18, bring your parent, guardian with you who can accept legal and financial responsibility to sign your application. If you are an emancipated minor, a responsible adult can sign for you if they wish to accept responsibility for your actions as a driver. May drive from 6 a.m. to midnight with a licensed driver at least 21 years old who has had at least one year of driving experience and who is riding with you in the front seat. From midnight to 6 a.m., must be accompanied by licensed parent or guardian. May drive motorcycles, motor scooters or light motor-driven cycles of five-brake horsepower or less from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. During daylight savings time, the permittee may operate motor scooters or light motor-driven cycles from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. A permittee may not operate a motorcycle, motor scooter, or light motor-driven cycle at any other time unless supervised by licensed parent or guardian. A Six -month suspension for conviction of traffic offenses totaling six or more points. Must have held your beginners permit for 180 days.

 

CONDITIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE:

 New law

Must be at least 15 but less than 16 years old. Must have held beginners permit for 180 days. Submit a certificate of completion for a driver’s education course. Submit a certificate of satisfactory school attendance. Pass THE vision and skills (road) test. Bring your parent or guardian with you who can accept legal and financial responsibility to sign your application. If you are an emancipated minor, a responsible adult can sign for you if they wish to accept responsibility for your actions as a driver. Completed at least 40 hours of driving practice, including at least 10 hours of driving during darkness, supervised by licensed parent or guardian.

May drive alone from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or 8 p.m. during daylight savings time). From 6 p.m. ( or 8 p.m. during daylight savings time) until midnight, may drive with a licensed driver at least 21 years old riding with you in the front seat. Between midnight and 6 a. m., may drive with a licensed parent or legal guardian riding with you in the front seat. May not transport more than two passengers who are under 21 years of age unless accompanied by licensed adult age 21 or older, except when transporting family members, or students to or from school.  There is a Six-month suspension for conviction of traffic offenses totaling six or more points. If convicted of a traffic offence or involved in an at-fault accident, the removal of restrictions is postponed for 12 months from the date of the traffic offence or accident in which he was at fault or until he is 17 years of age. May obtain full driving privileges at age 16 after holding conditional license for one year without any traffic violations or at-fault accidents.

SPECIAL RESTRICTED DRIVER’S LICENSE: 

New law

Must be at least 16 but less than 17 years old. Must have had your beginners license for 180 days. Pass the vision and skills (road) test. Submit a certificate of completion for a driver’s education course. Submit a certificate of satisfactory school attendance. Completed at least 40 hours of driving practice, including at least 10 hours of driving during darkness, supervised by licensed parent or guardian. Bring your parent or guardian with you who can accept legal and financial responsibility to sign your application. If you are an emancipated minor, a responsible adult can sign for you if they wish to accept responsibility for your actions as a driver. May drive alone from 6 a. m. to 6 p. m. (or 8 p.m. during daylight savings time). From 6 p. m. (or 8 p. m. during daylight time) until midnight, may drive with a licensed driver at least 21 years old riding with you in the front seat. Between midnight and 6 a. m. may drive with a licensed parent or legal guardian riding with you in the front seat. The time restrictions can be waived if you can prove they interfere with your job or travel between home and school or vocational training. To obtain the time restrictions waiver, submit two notarized statements: one from your parent or legal guardian and one from your employer or school official. Both statements must give the reason for the waiver. May not transport more than two passengers who are under 21 years of age unless accompanied by licensed adult age 21 or older, except when transporting family members, or students to or from school. A six-month suspension for conviction of traffic offenses totaling six or more points. FIRST TIME DRIVER’S LICENSE AT AGE 17 AND ABOVE:

Have held a beginners permit for 180 days. Passed the vision and skills tests. If you are 17 years of age, you must bring your parent or guardian with you who can accept legal and financial responsibility to sign your application. If you are an emancipated minor, a responsible adult can sign for you if they wish to accept the responsibility for your actions a driver.
